Thank you for your interest in joining the reAIM lab!
Please read the following page in its entirety before reaching out to us.
Our lab is always looking for students with a strong computational background, not afraid to dive deep into multiple subfields of learning, and an interest in impactful AI for health, while contributing to methodological and human-centered advances in AI.
Dr. Joshi is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI), an affiliate of the Department of Computer Science, and a member of the Data Science Institute (DSI). Consequently, there are several avenues for students and researchers to join our lab:
Doctoral Students
Doctoral students can join reAIM via the following programs:
- Biomedical Informatics located in the Graduate School of Arts and Science at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
- Computer Science at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Given the individual nature of the degree and our lab's focus on machine learning to a wide range of topics relevant to healthcare, thesis work will be driven by the student's research regardless of which program they join. The key difference is in core coursework and milestones: DBMI students will take classes on symbolic methods, clinical informatics, and healthcare delivery, while Computer Science students will take courses in algorithms and systems. Students in both departments will take electives according to their research interests. We will allocate desk space and resources at our offices located at the medical center (CUIMC) campus regardless of which department the student joins.
The best way to get in contact with the lab is by emailing Professor Joshi at sj3261[at]cumc[dot]columbia[dot]edu
. While we are always excited by the prospect of new collaborators, our email inboxes can get quite busy, particularly during application season. We may not be able to respond individually.
Please note your interest in working with Dr. Shalmali Joshi in your application.
Postdoctoral Researchers
- Postdoctoral openings via the Department of Biomedical Informatics will be posted on our website and the DBMI Careers page.
- Postdoctoral researchers can also join DBMI via the Department's National Library of Medicine (NLM) Training Grant if they are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents. The NLM fellowship gives two years of support.
- The Data Science Institute also hosts postdoctoral fellows. The program does not have citizenship requirements and supports researchers for two years via year-long renewable appointments.
Master's and Undergraduate Students
If you are a current master's or undergraduate student at Columbia University interested in rotating in our lab, please reach out to Dr. Joshi with the following:
- Your program, major, expected year of graduation.
- Your research interests and how they align with reAIM.
- Your goals for the rotation.
- The amount of time you can commit to research this semester.
- Contact information for references.
- Grades at any courses relevant to Machine Learning (e.g. Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Optimization, etc.).
- Attach your unofficial Columbia and undergraduate (if applicable) transcripts.
Visiting Researchers and Outside Collaborators
Please contact Dr. Joshi if you are an external researcher interested in visiting or collaborating with our lab.
